Meet our Instructor Trainers
John Crews
John Crews has
dedicated his life to teaching people the rewards in the sports
he loves. He has been teaching windsurfing for 16 summers,
teaching snow skiing for 27 winters, and previously directed
schools in water-skiing and karate. Before joining HST in 1989,
John directed successful windsurfing schools on Kauai and in San
Diego. Currently, he serves as the Senior Instructor Trainer for HST.
John's educational background includes certification in the post-graduate program of Movement Education from the Rolf Institute, concentrating on studies in anatomy, kinesiology, psychology and movement analysis.
John has appeared in television specials and films involving both windsurfing and skiing, and he's been published in both Windsurfing and Skiing magazines. He produces both windsurfing and skiing videos, and his windsurfing video, titled "Jibes and Tacks Maui style," is available for purchase (please call 1 800 968-5423). John was voted Ski Instructor of the Year for the Sun Valley region of the country. In addition, he was the featured instructor in Skiing magazine's 1995/96 article as the top instructor in America.
John's windsurfing teaching schedule fills up fast. Book in advance if you want a lesson with John Crews by requesting him on our reservation form.
Alan Cadiz
Alan
Cadiz, the founder of HST and long time professional sailor prior to that, is
considered one of the world's best instructors for both windsurfing and
kitesurfing. His quiet, comfortable teaching style and mastery of his
sports gives confidence and makes learning fun and easy. Alan's
"Jibing" video has been widely acknowledged as the best instructional
windsurfing video ever produced. If you are working on any of the jibe
skills, beginner through advanced, we strongly recommend that you watch the
video as much as possible prior to your lessons. It will short-cut the
learning process, guaranteed.
If he is not sailing or kitesurfing, Alan enjoys deep sea
fishing in Maui's beautiful waters. He is also an avid big wave surfer,
tow-in surfer, paddle boarder and a great dad to his two daughters, Cady and
Cloe.
Both John Crews and Alan Cadiz are Instructor Trainers for our staff of qualified instructors. We strive to set the highest standard in the industry. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner just discovering the sport, a shortboard sailor learning to jibe, or an advanced sailor looking for some pointers in the waves; our instructors have the knowledge and teaching ability to help you reach your windsurfing goals in the shortest possible time..
Our Instructors:
BILL BOYUM
After ten years of teaching windsurfing, the question Bill gets most often, is, "how do you have so much patience when you teach?" Well, the answer is, the excitement every time he watches someone challenge themselves to grasp the intangible, invisible force that is in the wind. He looks at it like the path to a new perspective, that people, new to the sport, have never experienced. Bill approaches that challenge not only with patience but is very enthusiastic in finding the approach for that individual, that will best communicate what he has learned in 28 years of wavesailing at the 'super bowl' of windsurfing, Hookipa. He understands an entry level student feeling like they are standing on the mechanical bull at 'Gilleys'. He knows and is very good at communicating the techniques to conquer that. Bill lives in the town of Paia where his father was born and raised. Daily swims or other more energetic forms of water sports, are the diet of his life. Surfing has been his 'wingman' for 45 years. To say that he is at home in the ocean here on Maui, would be a understatement. But his greatest strength is seeing through the eyes of a student and starting from their perspective. What that means to a potential student of his is, that they will be in the safest, most capable hands available. Bill is also a licensed Rolfer and massage therapist and has a big following among the 'sports crowd' that visits Maui. He has been published in Surfer's Journal and was the one who first explored and then established the surf camp at G-land on the SE tip of Java in 1974. It was the first of it's kind. These days his 'side' interests are snowboarding in British Columbia and returning to Indonesia to go giant Trevally fishing and surfing with his son Cyrus, who teaches school in Java.

Video Taping &
Playback
One of
the greatest tools ever invented for self teaching is the video
camera, as it is ideal for trouble shooting and fine tuning your
jibes and other difficult maneuvers. Alan Cadiz and HST
have utilized video playback since the school first opened in
1986. Using a tripod and 10X zoom lens, they can full frame you
at 50 meters. After a few turns, come back to the beach and watch
your jibes in slow motion and stop action on the video monitor
right there on the sand. Then you can go back on the water for
more taping.
Private Locations
HST instructors will come to you if are staying at
one of the North shore beachfront homes, or other private sailing locations.
(Two hour minimum lesson time at our "on-location" rate of $62 per
hour.)
Coast Runs
Sailing from Hookipa to Kanaha is a summertime
rush! Like the endless ski run, it is all down hill. The record
time from Hookipa to Kanaha is about 14 minutes, a very, very
fast run. We take our time, sailing for about two and a half
hours, and we often stop at coastal sailing spots along the way.
Coast runs are for advanced sailors. You must be able to sail in
a variety of conditions and make most of your jibes.
