There is more to riding a short board than just jibing. Sailing up wind, using a harness and footstraps, and fine turning your sail are all skills that will help you sail with less effort. Learning with an instructor who will sail with you on the water makes all the difference. |
There is a substantial leap in your learning curve when you
complete more jibes than you miss. Falling at the end of a run means wrestling
the sail out of the water, burning calories, and losing time; important
commodities that you could have been spent getting upwind or setting up
for your next jibe or wave ride. Completing your jibe almost doubles your
sailing and learning time.

If you are learning jibes for the first time, your instructor may have you learn the basics on the simulator, followed by sailing with you on the water, after determining your goals. If you have some jibing skills, but lack the details, your instructor will sail with you to trouble shoot your jibe and demonstrate methods to correct or redirect your techniques. All of the HST jibing instructors can teach this method and are highly skilled sailors. And most important, we don't watch from the beach - we sail with you!

If you don't already have our "Jibing" instructional video, we strongly recommend picking up a copy before your jibe lessons. It will definitely short-cut the learning process!
Freestyle sailing tricks are fun to learn and fun to do with your friends. Learn big jumps and loops in strong winds or master all the flashy sail tricks in lighter winds. Who says tricks are for kids?
Maui is known as the "Mecca of Wave Sailing." Learn to rip it up our spectacular waves with the best of them. Enjoy the exhilaration of long rides on beautiful waves. We will teach you how to make top to bottom, bottom to top turns, and jibing on a wave face. Our experienced instructors will be in the zone with you, showing you the dynamics of waves and wave sailing. Wave selection and safety as well as right-of-way rules will be covered too.
